Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy [1] and vain deceit [2][3][4], after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. [5][6][7]

  1. Transliteration: philosophia Pronunciation: fil-os-of-ee'-ah
  2. Transliteration: apatē Pronunciation: ap-at'-ay
  3. The Aramaic can be translated “strips you naked.”
  4. The Greek states “takes you captive”
  5. Paul is talking about human wisdom and logic as opposed to spiritual truth (Galatians 4:3). These principles are sometimes expressed in rule-based religion and self-help philosophy, but since they are the fruit off the forbidden tree, they enslave and curse us.
  6. King James Version (KJV)
  7. Colossians 2:8 TPT - Beware that no one distracts you or intimidates you (see note 2 and 3) in their attempt to lead you away from Christ’s fullness by pretending to be full of wisdom when they’re filled with endless arguments of human logic. For they operate with humanistic and clouded judgments based on the mindset of this world system, and not the anointed truths of the Anointed One.
