And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger[1] of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.[2][3]

  1. The Greek word translated “messenger” here in this text, is also rendered “angel” elsewhere in the New Testament (see Luke 1:13, 2 Corinthians 11:14 and Galatians 4:14).
  2. In this verse, Paul made it very clear that this thorn in the flesh was a messenger from satan and not from God.
